Abstract

The meanings of the Holy Qur'an have two categories: a primitive or first, clear and explicit meaning that any reader can understand its denotation, and a secondary implicit meaning that can only be accessed by one who has a very thorough knowledge of the words and culture of this Quranic language and its connotations, and more particularly the metonymy and trope, which pose problems of comprehension for the specialist of the Quranic language and problems of translation for the translator of the sacred text, wanting to translate them into another language. The latter is therefore perplexed between finding an equivalent figure of speech in the target language, or finding meaning without paying attention to the aesthetics of words and the prosody of sound. That is what led me to ask the following question: To what extent can the translator succeed in the translation of the Quranic periphrasis or connotation into French?
