The pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is at a conceptual crossroads. While Neuro-Symbolic (NeSy) architectures promise to unify learning and reasoning, and metacognitive frameworks aim to instill self-awareness, these efforts largely lack a unifying philosophical and architectural principle. A recent systematic review highlights this fragmentation, noting that metacognition remains the least explored area in NeSy research.1 This paper argues that a blueprint for such a unified theory can be found in an unlikely source: the historic dialogue between physicist Wolfgang Pauli and psychologist Carl Jung. We interpret Pauli's archetypal dreams-featuring cosmic clocks, observer figures, and the union of opposites (coniunctio oppositorum)-not as mystical curiosities, but as profound allegories for the necessary components of a truly general intelligence. We propose the Pauli-Jung Conjecture for AGI: that a robust, verifiable AGI must be architected as a synthesis of a fast, holistic, wave-based substrate (the psyche) and a slow, discrete, logical substrate (the physis), governed by an introspective, metacognitive observer. We then operationalize this conjecture in the Cognito architecture. Cognito integrates a holonomic cognitive field for intuitive processing, a dependently typed symbolic substrate for verifiable reasoning, and a Metacognitive Controller that serves as the introspective observer. Finally, we scale this model to a multi-agent system via the Computational Monad Model (CMM), where specialized agents (fragments) can undergo a verifiable Monadic Fusion into a collective super-agent (avatar), a process secured by Zero-Knowledge Proofs. This work reframes the challenge of AGI, suggesting that the path forward lies in a deep synthesis of formal methods, neuro-symbolic AI, and the foundational principles of consciousness itself.

Cognito operationalizes a dual-process theory of mind through a neuro-symbolic framework, governed by an explicit Metacognitive Controller (CMC) that manages a fast, intuitive sub-symbolic substrate and a slow, deliberative symbolic substrate.1 We address key criticisms of conceptual AGI frameworks by detailing: (1) a formal runtime loop and signal flow that unifies these components; (2) a novel paradigm of Identity-Typed Programming (ITP), which encodes an agent's identity and permissions into its static type signature using Quantitative Type Theory (QTT), enabling compile-time verification of authorization logic 5 ; (3) a hybrid verification model that combines the static guarantees of ITP with a dynamic runtime enforcement layer for contextual safety 7 ; and (4) a Computational Monad Model (CMM) for scaling, which includes a cryptographically verifiable protocol for fusing multiple specialized agents into a coherent, emergent super-agent. We introduce the Cognito architecture, a technical realization of a CLO that unifies a fast, intuitive, wave-based substrate (System 1) with a slow, deliberative, logical substrate (System 2), governed by an explicit Metacognitive Controller (CMC) that functions as the system's oscillator. The Resonant Mind: An Oscillatory, Formally Verifiable Architecture for General Intelligence

The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is in a "third summer," driven by the remarkable success of large-scale sub-symbolic models, yet simultaneously confronted by their inherent limitations in robustness, explainability, and systematic reasoning.1 Neuro-Symbolic AI (NeSy) has emerged as the prevailing paradigm to address these gaps, seeking to merge pattern-based learning with logical reasoning. However, this paper posits that current NeSy research, despite its progress, overlooks a critical element for genuine autonomy and reliability: metacognition. We introduce Cognito, a novel architecture that places a Metacognitive Controller at its core. This controller is designed to monitor, evaluate, and dynamically regulate the interaction between a high-efficiency sub-symbolic substrate and a verifiable symbolic reasoning engine. Cognito's main contributions are: (1) a formal model for metacognitive control in AI, addressing a quantified gap in the literature; (2) a path toward verifiability-by-design in complex AI systems using dependently typed programming languages; and (3) a foundational framework for the development of a more robust, adaptable, and trustworthy Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
